The Deflector

The Deflector smiles with both hands open while offering agreeable phrases about perspectives, options and trade-offs. The card describes a character who can communicate refusal without using a negative word. A notification reports that no negatives were detected, and the description warns of a possible evolution into an Escalator when cornered. The surface of the conversation is welcoming, but the requested decision keeps moving beyond reach.

The phrases are not inherently evasive. Exploring options can improve a decision, and understanding trade-offs is often essential. The joke depends on their repeated use without a point at which the exploration produces an answer. A person can leave the meeting feeling heard while still having no commitment, no refusal and no clear account of what must happen next. Courtesy has become a holding pattern.

That uncertainty has a cost because other people continue to organize work around the missing answer. They may wait, prepare further material or assume that a warm response indicates likely support. A clear no would at least allow another route to be considered. The Deflector preserves flexibility for the speaker by distributing uncertainty to everybody else. Nothing rude has been said, yet coordination becomes harder.

The evolution warning adds another escape route. When a direct answer can no longer be postponed through discussion, the issue may be sent upwards for somebody else to decide. Escalation can be entirely appropriate when authority is genuinely missing. It becomes part of the satire when the handoff conceals the fact that the original decision-maker simply preferred not to own an answer.

A useful way to read this card is to listen for the output of the conversation rather than its emotional tone. Which option is being evaluated, by whom and by when? What information would permit a decision? Who has the authority to make it? Those questions allow a real exploration to continue and make an indefinite deflection easier to recognize. The aim is not to ban diplomatic language. It is to ensure that diplomacy eventually delivers a sentence another person can plan around.
