Cross-Team Alignment

Same words. Different realities. Higher productivity.

Reality Bytes Me artwork: Cross-Team Alignment

Why this one bites

A manager proposes using requirements broad enough for every team to interpret differently. One team pictures a racecar; another pictures a bulldozer. The engineer inherits the task of combining both products without the time or budget for either.

This fictional workplace satire follows ambiguity from a management strategy to an engineering specification. Agreement on the wording conceals disagreement about what anyone is supposed to build.

  • Title: Cross-Team Alignment. Same words. Different realities. Higher productivity.
  • Panel 1 — Manager: This FY, we’re going to boost productivity by using more generic wording that can mean anything.
  • Panel 2 — Manager: That way we encourage cross-team collaboration by allowing different teams to interpret the data according to their needs.
  • Panel 3 — Engineer: But what if Team A thinks that means we’re building a racecar, while Team B thinks we’re building a Bulldozer? Thought bubbles show Team A’s racecar and Team B’s bulldozer.
  • Panel 4 — Manager: Both will be correct.
  • Panel 5 — Engineer: So... we just need to build a Bulldozer that goes from 0-100 in 10 seconds then? A thought bubble shows a bulldozer with racing wheels and a rear wing, labelled 0-100: 10 sec.
  • Panel 6 — Manager: We are a customer-driven company, the product will be what the customer thinks it is.
  • Panel 7 — Engineer: Why not build one Bulldozer and one race car? Manager: Because we don’t have the time or the budget to build two separate products.
  • Panel 8 — Engineer: Build one product that is two products, in half the time. Got it. The presentation board reads Project: All-Terrain Performance, 0-100: 10 sec, with Fast, Tough, Versatile, Cost Efficient and Customer Driven all checked.
  • Posters: One vision, many interpretations, greater impact. Same words, bigger possibilities. Flexibility drives innovation. It’s not confusion, it’s customer centricity.
  • Mugs: Synergy today. Align, empower, deliver. Multiple truths, better results. Customers define success. Do more with less.
  • Header: Vague requirements, brighter futures. Footer: Same meetings. Different reality. © 2026.
